India Nears ‘Magic Pill’ Moment as Semaglutide Patent Expires

India is on the verge of a magic-pill moment as the patent for semaglutide—the active ingredient in blockbuster weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy—expires on March 20, 2026.

After this the Indian pharmaceutical industry would be able to launch the cheaper versions for these drugs. Companies like Cipla and Sun Pharma can potentially slash the prices from 10,000 rupees to 3,000 rupees, and this could bring a revolution for those 77 million people who are suffering from diabetes and overweight issues. Although, it's advised to take these drugs after medical consultation.
